A Long-Standing Name in Replacement Bearings

National is a well-known name in the replacement bearing aftermarket, with a catalog built around the bearings that keep wheels, axles, and drivelines turning smoothly. Many technicians know the brand from years of hub and axle work, and the line covers older vehicles with serviceable tapered bearings as well as newer vehicles with pressed-in or bolt-on designs.

Wheel Bearings, Hub Assemblies, and Axle Bearings

The National Bearings lineup focuses on rotating components at the wheel ends and in the driveline. That includes tapered roller bearings and races, ball bearings, sealed wheel bearings, and hub assemblies found alongside our other wheel hubs and bearings. The brand also covers rear axle bearings for axle repairs and bearings used in differentials.

Shoppers typically come here after hearing a humming or growling noise that changes with speed or while turning, feeling play in a wheel, noticing uneven tire wear, or seeing an ABS light on vehicles where the wheel speed sensor is built into the hub. Tire, CV joint, and differential noise can sound similar, so inspect carefully before ordering.

Why Bearing Quality Shows Up on the Road

Bearings carry the weight of the vehicle while spinning hundreds of times per mile. Precision, material hardness, and seal quality all affect how long a bearing stays quiet. A poorly made bearing may run fine at first and then develop noise or play early, which means paying for the same labor twice. Quality aftermarket bearings are a common alternative to OEM, offering similar designs at a different price point; comparing specifications, seal type, and included hardware helps you find the right balance.

Choosing the Right Bearing Type for the Job

First, determine whether your vehicle uses a serviceable bearing and race, a press-in bearing, or a complete bolt-on hub assembly. Serviceable bearings are cleaned, inspected, repacked, or replaced along with the race; press-in bearings require a press and the right adapters; hub assemblies swap as a unit. When replacing a serviceable wheel or axle bearing, plan on a new seal as well, and National Oil Seals offers matching seals for many of the same applications. Replacing bearings in pairs on the same axle is a common practice for consistent feel, though not always required.

How to Confirm National Bearing Fitment

Bearing applications can change with drivetrain (2WD, 4WD, or AWD), brake type, ABS equipment, axle ratio, and production date. Select your vehicle, read the fitment notes, and compare bearing and race numbers stamped on your old part. Use your VIN when available. For torque and preload specifications, follow your service manual or a qualified technician, since incorrect preload can shorten bearing life.

            National Bearings Questions Answered

How do I know if a wheel bearing is going bad?

Common signs include humming or growling that rises with speed, play in the wheel, or roughness when spinning it by hand. A technician can confirm whether the noise is the bearing or another component.

Should I replace the bearing race too?

Yes. Tapered roller bearings and races wear together, so they're typically replaced as a set.

Can I keep driving on a noisy wheel bearing?

A worn bearing can get worse and affect handling, so have it inspected promptly rather than waiting.

Do I need a new seal when replacing a bearing?

In most serviceable applications, yes. A new seal keeps grease in and contaminants out.
